  • Suicidal thoughts or actions should never be ignored. If these warning signs apply to you or someone you know, get help right away – particularly if the behavior is new or has recently increased.

    Immediate Warning Signs

    • Talking about wanting to die or wanting to kill themselves

    • Talking about feeling empty or hopeless, no reason to live

    • Talking about feeling trapped or having no solutions

    • Feeling unbearable emotional or physical pain

    • Talking about being a burden to others

    • Withdrawing from family and friends

    • Giving away important possessions

    • Saying goodbye to friends and family

    • Putting affairs in order, such as making a will

    • Taking great risks that could lead to death

    • Talking or thinking about death often

    Other Serious Warning Signs

    • Displaying extreme mood swings

    • Making a plan or looking for ways to kill themselves

    • Talking about feeling great guilt or shame

    • Using alcohol or drugs more often

    • Acting anxious or agitated

    • Changing eating or sleeping habits

    • Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge

  • We all know someone who has a problem with drinking or drugs – but it can be hard to see it in ourselves. Do any of these warning signs apply to you, or a family member? If so, take advantage of our free, confidential addiction counseling and support services today.

    SUBSTANCE ABUSE

    Recurring use of alcohol or drugs that causes clinically significant impairment, including health problems, disability and failure to meet major responsibilities at work, school or home. Can lead to addiction. SIGNS:

    • Irritability and moodiness

    • Regularly missing work, school, or social events

    • Failing to fulfill obligations

    • Denying the severity of the substance

    • Isolating from family and friends

    • Driving under the influence

    • Financial problems

    • Getting arrested for DUI

    • Losing relationships

    ADDICTION

    A chronic, relapsing disease characterized by physical and/ or psychological dependence on the need of the substance.

    SIGNS:

    • Driving drunk or impaired

    • Getting in trouble with the law

    • Using alcohol/substance to alter mood

    • Lying about or hiding drinking/drug habits

    • Needing more alcohol/drug to feel its effects

    • Withdrawals

    • Irritability

    • Obsessive thoughts about alcohol/drugs

    • Binge drinking/drug use

    • Accidents

    • Engaging in risky activities/behaviors

    • Health, social or financial problems caused by drinking or drug use

    Did You Know? Younger people are more likely to use drugs, but the rate of drug use among people over 40 is growing even faster than younger groups.
